My usual rule of thumb is to finish one construction project before starting another. It’s why we waited almost two years to start on our bathrooms/mud room after finishing our kitchen/family room. Nothing puts you off construction like construction. But since we’re already in the thick of it (construction pics to come), I think we might add another small (but still time consuming) item onto our construction to-do list; I mean, what’s a little more dust?
To that end, we are on the hunt for new front doors.
Our current doors are from 1965 and unless you are a 250lb body builder, they are practically impossible to open; they also let in obscene amounts of cold air during the winter. Basically, if something can be wrong with a door besides having actual holes in them, our doors have it. Obviously, their days are doomed.
While doing research I made a list of all the qualities my ideal front door would have:
- Vinyl (instead of wood which has much more upkeep)
- Windows on the top (but not too high because if Harriet, our sweet pup, could see out she would bark for the rest of her life)
- Clear glass (instead of decorative which I think would date the house)
- Wood grained look (it will be vinyl, but I’d like a rich wood look vs. painted)
It’s not hard to find everything I want, but it is hard to pull the trigger. Doors are expensive and something I hope not to replace again in the next 50+ years. I want to make sure the doors we pick are perfect.
In order to make sure I know exactly what feel/look I want, here are some inspiration pics to guide me along my font door journey. I must point out that our doors are double and so those are the pictures I’ve included.
If you’re looking for more inspiration, some of my favorite bloggers have also tackled the subject of doors.
Elements of Style updated her walkway/front door and it looks fab.
A little too mid-century modern for our house, but I do love the three windows from House*Tweaking
John and Sherry know how to pick a door color.
And there you have it. Doors for days. Now if only I could pick one.
